These are not the works of celebrated artists such as Michelangelo and Bernini, who with many others contributed beautiful, often elaborate sculpture for the interiors and facades of Italian churches. Rather, they are to be found in side chapels or to the side of the main altars, usually at eye level rather than elevated. Depicting saints and biblical figures to evoke the stories of historic Christianity, they have a simple elegance and dignity that spoke to me and opened my heart.
